A householder who ignored repeated warnings to clear waste from their garden has ended up in court and been ordered to pay £1,201.

North Lincolnshire Council followed up on complaints about the state of a garden and asked the resident to clear it up before action was taken.

The householder ignored the advice, and a Community Protection Warning was issued. This was ignored, as was a subsequent Community Protection Notice.

They were then given a £100 fixed penalty notice and when this wasn’t paid the council prosecuted.

The case was heard at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court, where the householder was found guilty and ordered to pay a £440 fine, a £176 surcharge and £585 in costs – a total of £1,201.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The householder was given every opportunity to do the right thing. They were warned, given time to clear the waste and then issued with a fine – and still ignored us.

“The result is a £1,201 bill and a court conviction. That is what happens when you think the rules don’t apply to you.

“Most people do the right thing and take pride in their homes and neighbourhoods. It’s only right that we take action against those who don’t.

“If you receive a warning from us, deal with it. Ignoring it won’t make the problem go away – it can make it a lot more expensive.”

The latest fixed penalty notices (FPN) issued for waste offences in Scunthorpe North also include four separate incidents of residents dumping waste in alleyways in Scunthorpe North.

CCTV spotted all four of them, and they were fined – and paid – £100 each.

During an alleyway patrol, Envirocrime Officers found evidence in flytipped rubbish linking it to a local property. The perpetrator was tracked down, admitted the offence and paid the £100 FPN.

In a similar incident in Scunthorpe North, officers found an abandoned box with evidence inside that enabled them to track down the offender. They admitted dumping the box and were fined £100.

If you see evidence of fly-tipping or other environmental offences, let the council know via the website. Reports, including photographs where possible, can help officers investigate and take action against those responsible.
